One of the most annoying pests, fleas and ticks can be really difficult to deal with. What makes them bothersome is their small size and their agility. If you have pets at home, they are the most susceptible to infestation. Once fleas and ticks get on your pet, it’s likely that they will spread over to your house, furniture, and even your yard. Here are ways to get rid of fleas and ticks from your pet and home.

Give a bath to your pet
Start by taking care of flea and tick infestation in your pet. Get a flea and tick shampoo. Ask the vet for the best options for your furry one. Also, keep a flea comb handy. Fleas and ticks usually are present in and around the tail and neck. Comb out these areas. Keep some soapy water close by to wash off the fleas from the comb. Also, make sure to do some spot-cleaning. Whenever your pet comes home from the outside, brush them thoroughly with a flea comb.

Clean out your pet’s bedding
Always remember to wash your pet’s bedding and plush toys as well. You don’t have to clean these every day, but once every two days, at least. Wash the bedding in hot water. Use pet-friendly detergents and cleaning agents. Also, while drying the bedding, make sure the heat setting is at the highest. You can take your pet’s bedding to dry cleaners for a thorough cleaning. But make sure that the cleaners are using pet-friendly cleaning products.

Vacuum the house
Set the vacuum cleaner to the fastest setting. Vacuum over the floor, mattresses, and upholstery. Fleas and ticks love hiding in tight spaces and corners. Cocoons, larvae, and eggs can be cleaned out from these places quickly with a vacuum cleaner. Make sure to use a vacuum bag that can be immediately disposed of with minimum contact. Use a steam cleaner to clean out pet beds, upholstery, and carpets. Don’t forget to clean out the spots, which are your pet’s favorite. These are the hotspots for ticks and flea infestation. The combination of soap and hot water employed in steam cleaning can get rid of fleas and ticks instantly.

Employ chemical treatments
If the tick and flea infestation is severe, you will need to use chemical treatments. Pick insecticides that can kill adult fleas and ticks as well as their eggs, pupae, and larvae. Use foggers and aerosol sprays to get into every nook and corner of the house. Spray the insecticides under beds, wardrobes, sofas, and tables. Ensure that pets and people do not come in contact with the chemicals until these have dried. Spray the chemical wearing sufficient protective gear. Also, ensure that the chemical treatment is done only when everyone gets out of the house.
